Master's in Mathematics (Double Degree)

The Master's of Mathematics (double degree) is a programme offered by the universities of Bern and Konstanz. With their combined expertise, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Konstanz and the Mathematical Institute at the University of Bern offer a wide array of courses in pure and applied mathematics.

This programme is designed to attract highly qualified mathematics students from Germany, Switzerland, and beyond, providing them with the knowledge, skills, and international experience necessary to excel in academic and/or business environments. They will have a wide choice in mathematical specialisation, and they will benefit from joint supervision by researchers in Konstanz and Bern.

Basic information

Number of credits: 120 ECTS credits
Combination possibilities:

Mono 120 ECTS credits

Duration: 4 semesters
Language: English
Beginning studies: Fall semester

In the Master’s programme in Mathematics (Double Degree), students learn theories and methods in fundamental areas of both pure and applied mathematics. There are courses in the following subject areas: algebra, foundations, algebraic geometry, differential geometry, topology, analysis, numerical mathematics, probability theory, and statistics.

Students engage with current research in these fields and are guided toward independent scientific work, such as in their Master's thesis. By studying at both the University of Bern and the University of Konstanz, students gain international experience and, upon successful completion, they receive two Master's degrees.

The Mathematical Institute offers part-time positions as teaching assistants to students with excellent academic performance, allowing them to assist in bachelor’s level courses.

The Master’s programme in Mathematics (Double Degree) comprises 120 ECTS credits. It is conducted in cooperation with the University of Konstanz and leads to a Master’s degree from each of the two universities. Students typically spend two semesters at the University of Bern and two semesters at the University of Konstanz.

The programme consists of a Master's module Bern (at least 30 ECTS credits), a Master's module Konstanz (at least 30 ECTS credits), and a Master's thesis (30 ECTS credits). Furthermore, the Master's modules Bern and Konstanz together must comprise at least 90 ECTS credits.

The standard duration of the programme is four semesters for full-time students.

Courses are generally taught in English.

Further information about the Mathematics Master's programme (Double Degree) can be found under "Studienplan" (in German).
